Three generations of the Bruwer family have worked the vines and made beautiful wines in this corner of South Africa’s Robertson Valley. Their Cape Dutch homestead dates from 1818, and the family have dedicated themselves to the work here since 1927. Known locally as the valley of wines and roses, the area enjoys optimal growing conditions, with the growing season generally marked by generous warmth and sunshine balanced by drying breezes and cool nights. Third generation Jacques studied winemaking at the prestigious Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch. As a high performing student, he was allocated a block of Chardonnay grapes to work with, and decided to turn this to a traditional method sparkling. ”It turned out to be a very significant experience”, he recalls. He has carried this forward, and today the Jacques Bruére sparkling is an anchor in the fine Bon Courage collection.
