About the Producer
Donatella Cinelli Colombini is a legend, with a far-reaching imprint on the wine industry. Her Casato Prime Donne was the first in Italy with an all-female staff, inspired by a disturbing conversation. Searching for a winemaker to oversee barrels of Brunello di Montalcino that were part of her share of the family estate in 1998, Donatella called the regional Enology school to ask for a good student winemaker. She was told flatly that they had to be booked years in advance. When she asked if there were any good student winemakers (female) she was told they had many. At that moment Donatella resolved to change the landscape, both by hiring and promoting female staff and women winemakers, and by producing beautiful wines. From both properties, Casato Prime Donne (Montalcino) and Fattoria del Colle (Trequanda, Orcia), the wines show consistency, brightness and energy, and have been award-winning and landscape-changing.
Reviews & Notes
Sylvia Jansen
"The little sister of the famous Brunello di Montalcino, this Rosso ('the red') is made from the noble Sangiovese variety. Drinkable now, with beautiful balance, spicy tones and a great finish, this wine is made for many a happy dinner!"
Mike Muirhead
"My go to Rosso di Montalcino. This wine will impress Montalcino lovers, and neophytes. Really well made and balanced and oh so drinkable."
Gary Hewitt
"Walking the line between modern and classic--ripe, fresh and gulpable with dusty tannins, cherry and dried orange rind, all screaming Tuscan Sangiovese. Lovely level of extraction giving a grape pulp mid-palate with a balanced acid-tannin frame. Excellent. Drink any time. (2015 tasted 5 March 2018)"
