About the Producer
To walk through vineyards with Marta Rovira Carbonell, winemaker and principal of Mas d’En Gil, is to be treated to insights from a vine whisperer. Marta oversees the small estate, producing wines that are marked not only by the depth and power that marks Priorat, but by an uncommon freshness. She credits her results with the biodynamic techniques that she learned as a child at her grandmother’s side. In fact, it was this inspiration that drew Marta away from a successful career as a lead engineer in a company in Germany to return to the family wine business. Marta and her team have nurtured the old vines of the estate near Bellmunt del Priorat, surrounded by steep hillsides and woodlands, and have brought Mas d’En Gil into a leading group of Priorat stars.
Reviews & Notes
Gary Hewitt
"Priorat is a caldron that easily ripens Garnacha and Carignan--yet, in the hands of Mas d'en Gil wines retain vitality. Perhaps their uncompromising commitment to biodynamic viticulture breathes life into the vines. Rich, vibrant red fruits, a silky mid-palate & an extended finish are highlights, but the wine gives more with subtle complexity. The producers suggest serving at 14C (to minimize the alcohol?) in a Burgundy balloon (for the complexity?)--good calls. Delicious. (2011 Feb25/19)"
