About the Producer
Jean-Marc Burgaud is a small winemaker with a big reputation for fine wines. He began in 1989 with his life and work partner Christine, and together they have taken some very good vineyard property to define a new standard for Beaujolais. The old vines (50+ years in some places) on the esteemed Côtes du Py in Morgon, and smaller lots in Regnie and Beaujolais Villages are managed organically, by hand and using horses. Very low intervention in winemaking, and an approach in the winery that treats their native Gamay as a noble Burgundian variety result in wines of character, depth and complexity.
Reviews & Notes
Rick Watkins
"This will change your mind about what Beaujolais really is. Very full-bodied for a 100% Gamay wine, the Morgon "Cru" is always one of the most intense and long lived Beaujolais. The review on the Vinous website gave it "93" points and a drinking window of 2021 - 2028. With some air it opens up in the glass to a beautiful, black-fruited full-bodied wine with violets on the nose intermixed with crushed raspberries and black cherries. Lovely"
Gary Hewitt
"Morgon sits at the apex of Beaujolais wines and Cotes de Py is a special vineyard. This young wine shows the ripe cherry/raspberry character of Gamay but has the structure with ripe lightly gripping tannins, fresh acidity, and balance to age more like a Burgundian Pinot Noir. Excellent. (2019 tasted 4 July 2022)"
