The contribution of Zarate to the reputation of Rias Baixas is immense. In Spain’s northwestern winegrowing corner, Zarate has faced the cool, wet conditions that have been thought to be hostile for organic and biodynamic production, and has succeeded in natural viticulture. In a market of fresh, but not always exciting, Albariño wines, Zarate has taken this traditional grape variety and has transformed it, through old vines, skilled massal selection, and brilliant winemaking, into an art form. Zarate were the first to bottle a single-vineyard Albariño, and continue always to press forward the quality potential of this distinctive region.
