About the Producer
With more than a century of grape farming and winemaking in Barolo’s Serralunga d’Alba, the Massolino family have built a reputation for being able to combine an understanding of tradition with an appreciation for positive change. Their holdings are relatively large for this region (23 hectares in total), and in achieving this size there have been more than a few risks. In the 1950s Guiseppe Massolino recognized the potential of the Vigna Rionda site, trading a plot twice the size to acquire this choice vineyard. Today Vigna Rionda is one of the gems in the Massolino crown. The winery itself is directly across from the family home in the town centre of Serralunga d’Alba; in fact, the town’s Piazza Cappellano with a small parking lot and large vista is actually the roof of the underground Massolino extension—an investment in their home community.
Reviews & Notes
Todd Antonation
"Winner winner with roast chicken dinner! Beautiful purple/violet colour. Flavours and aromas of red licorice nibs and fresh raspberry's. The wine is elegant and focused with a finish that lingers for minutes! Best Barbera I have ever tasted."
Anton Sikorsky
"Fresh and lively with notes of blackberry, crushed raspberry, and a slight grapefruit peel note. Easy drinking and enjoyable. Enjoy this with a classic spaghetti and meatballs!"
Sylvia Jansen
"A lovely medium-bodied red with a depth of flavour that does not lean on oak or high alcohol--just beautiful tart fruits and a savoury edge, great finish. Perfect with foods served hot, or cold, meaty or veggie, high intensity or snack-ie--I love it!"
